The ancient Chinese were masters in bronze-casting, and nowhere does their skill and inventiveness in working with metal shine as much as in their weaponry. Beginning with the Shang dynasty in the 17th century BC, the Chinese proved themselves to be always adept, and often brilliant, in creating complex solid forms out of molten metal. By the Warring States period, when this exceptional fitting was cast, they were the finest metalworkers in the world.
